Coring
If you've ever noticed the lawns at a bowling green, and wondered why they always look so much better than yours, the following steps are the ones used to get that degree of perfection. Coring is carried out by a specially developed machine owned by AKERS of LAWN. In the old days, (and still in use by some lawn maintenance people) a few holes were poked into a lawn with a fork or machine that pushes the soil back down. This method of coring creates small holes by compacting the area around the hole and thus compounding the problem of hard soils. The coring machine which AKERS of LAWN use, on the other hand, actually extracts plugs of soil at 2 to 3 inch intervals, to a depth of up to three inches. By removing the plug to form a hole, water and nutrients are able to penetrate deep into the root system and when done regularly, can save up to 50% watering.

Scarifying
If your lawn is more than about five years of age, it will have developed a very coarse, spongy, deep matted root system and there will also be a quantity of thatching.
Thatching is a layer of under composed stems, roots and blades of grass that have accumulated between the top of the soil and the green part of the grass. This not only causes fungus and disease to form but limits the amount of water that is able to penetrate, causing wasted watering. The ONLY truly effective way to get rid of this problem is to call AKERS of LAWN. Once again using a specialised machine, AKERS of LAWN are able to scarify the whole area, giving you a lawn which is easier to mow, feels smoother, looks greener.
Reno-thinning
This rather unusual term, applied to a relatively new process which makes use of your old lawn as a base for the perfect lawn, means in effect, renovating. With yet another machine AKERS of LAWN go to work on areas that have thinned out or which are extremely patchy. This revolutionary system creates grooves at even intervals disturbing only the top soil, without affecting the existing levels or the established parts of the lawn. It employs the cross rake principle to ensure proper germination of the new seed, and by coring and mixing in the fertilizers, gypsum and new lawn seeds we create new, even growth which blends in with the existing lawn. With AKERS of LAWN reno-thinning, gone are the days of expensive rotary hoeing, levelling, total re-planting and rolling.
New Lawns
Here at AKERS of LAWN we believe in doing it right the first time. We call out to give a free, no obligation quotation, we test your current soil first checking for ph levels, nutrient levels, wettability, etc. as the existing soil may be fine to use as a base for your new lawn after it has been treated. In some cases, however, the existing lawn and soil will need to be replaced and we can do this with our own machinery and experienced operators. Preparation is the key to a great lawn! You can have a choice of Instant Turf or a quality seed lawn such as Parks Blend, a drought tolerant blend of seeds.

Sprinkler systems in lawns and gardens are a great way to control the amount of water that you use. Not only are the actual systems often not as expensive as you think to install, the money saved from wasting excess water can be quite substantial. Saving water, especially in our state and during this time of water restrictions all over the country, should be high on everyone’s priorities but to be able to save your lawn and garden is a bonus. With the correct watering system installed, following strict watering patterns and planting of water saving turf and plants, you can still have a picturesque garden and lawn. We only use and install quality products and give a 12 month replacement warranty* on the irrigation we supply and install. We do both above ground and subsurface systems with fully automatic, battery operated systems or manual available.

Follow-Up Service
At AKERS of LAWN, if organized, we provide a full back-up service, we return after 6-8 weeks, then each season to check the lawn and apply needed materials for the cost of the materials used and a small charge for labour. This enables us to monitor the progress of the lawn and to keep you informed if any problems are evident. We have permits to allow use of water on the day of application.
We use top-quality fertilizers, both chemical and organic, so the choice is yours. If your lawn has problems, or you are unsure, you are welcome to telephone our friendly office staff who will do their best to help you.
